Day 38: Choose This Day Whose Glory Is Better?

Day 38: Choose This Day Whose Glory Is Better?

Read: Hebrews 1:1 - 4

There is one thing in life that every single one of us has in common and one thing in life that everyone will expend the greatest levels of energy to determine and that is the answer to the ultimate question: which something or other is better than the other something or other. Which brand of whatever coffee makes the better first cup of morning Joe? What caffeine source is better for getting me started - coffee, tea, or cola? Which is better - sugar, or the myriad of sweeteners and sugar substitutes? Which is a better retirement investment tool - A Roth or traditional IRA? Yes, we are a group of people who pride ourselves on knowing which 'one' is the better choice.

The thing about knowing or striving to know which one thing is better over the other thing is as individual as you and me are. We are all created in the image of God. Each one of us is wholly unique for that is how God created us to be. So when you ask one other person or ten thousand other people which thing is better than the other for whatever reason and why you are going to have to spend an inordinate amount of time sorting and sifting through ten thousand answers trying to determine how any one of them is the least bit relevant to your singularly unique concern. Good luck to anyone searching the internet for the better cellular phone or the better computer.

The writer of the book of Hebrews returns again and again to the word “better” which is found some thirteen times in this book to show the superiority of Jesus to every other religious system. Christ is better than the angels (1:4). He brought in a better hope (7:19) because He is the mediator of a better covenant (7:22) which was established upon better promises (8:6) and so on. This letter is written to a group of people who are about to give up on their faith. This is a group who're at a standstill spiritually and in danger of going backwards (5:12). They are exhorted to take stock of what 'better' Jesus has to offer, not to give in to fear or doubt, stay on the course.

Ever since the world began, God has been speaking to human beings at different times and in many different ways; sometimes by direct communication, sometimes through dreams and vision but most of all through his prophets. Usually when He spoke, the people were invariably confronted by the overwhelming need to make all levels of life changing, life altering, life transforming decisions for which there is a whole host of 'better' worldly choices for them to choose from. With so many of these 'better' choices to choose from - the question that takes the longest to answer is this: Which one actually is 'better'? The 'real' 'better' question is "Whose glory is 'better'?"

Let Us Pray: Creator God, Author of all the ancient wisdom through which everything that was ever created came into being, including thankfully myself and my wife, help us to answer these seemingly unanswerable questions: Is it better to take refuge in the glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ than to put confidence in mortal, fallible man? Is it truly better to take our refuge in the eternal glory of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit than it is to place our temporary fleeting confidence in the ways of this world?
