Day 166: Are You Truly A Child Of God?
Read: Romans 8:9 - 17
Today I guess that almost every Christian thinks they are a child of
God. But is that true? Have you ever wondered who the real children of
God are? Does God possibly have anything to say about this? Some people
trust in the fact that they grew up in a Christian household from the
moment they were born. That this fact alone is what is the most
important basis for them saying they are Christian. Others trust in the
fact that they are religious. The story of a woman tailgating the man in
front of her. She became inpatient with his driving and started honking
her horn, yelling obscenities loud enough so that every driver and every pedestrian around could
hear her making herself the very center of attraction.
As she was still
in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face
of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her
car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was
searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.
After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the
door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting
officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I’m very sorry
for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were
blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing up a
major blue streak. So I walked back to my car looking at yours.
I noticed the ’What Would Jesus Do’ bumper
sticker, the ’Choose Life’ License plate holder, the ’Follow Me to
Sunday-School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish
emblem on the trunk. Naturally...I assumed you had stolen the car!" So, does being religious mean that you are a child of God? Does being a "Christian" mean that you are a child of God? Would you like to know for sure if you are
God’s child? Today, I want to challenge you to examine yourself by
God’s Word to see if you are truly His child. So, how do you know if you
are a child of God? It is a very important question you should be asking yourself. However, is it such an easy question for any of us "Christians" to answer?
Romans 8:9 'You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit,
since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the
Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.' The Word of God says that
you can know for sure that you are God's child if the Holy Spirit is
controlling your life. How would you know that? Answer this: What do
think about all day? Are your thoughts dominated by selfish ambition,
pride, being critical of yourself or others? Is your life filled with turmoil rather than peace? If these things are dominating your daily thinking, then you are being
controlled by your sinful not by the Holy Spirit. Then I would sincerely like to encourage you
to try centering your thoughts upon God.
Let Us Pray: Lord, you
cared enough about me to choose me as your child. I affirm that your
love for me is unconditional and unchanging. My own thoughts and
feelings are deceptive. I affirm that your plans for my life are for
fulfillment and fruitfulness. Father, I take refuge in you alone and
submit my struggle to you. Speak truth to my inner person. Please free
me through your love to be available for service to others.
