Day 191: Walk To Emmaus: From Heartbreak To Heartburn

Day 191: Walk To Emmaus: From Heartbreak To Heartburn

Read: Luke 24: 28 - 35

I remember reading a story once about a guy who was saved from a burning house. As the story went, the house was a complete loss and the man somewhat singed by the experience. Upon investigation, the fireman asked the owner about the cause of the blaze. He shrugged his shoulders. The fireman pointed out that the fire seemed to have started right in his own bed where he was sleeping. He shrugged his shoulders again. The fireman asked the owner if he was smoking in bed that night. He shrugged his shoulders again. Frustrated, the fireman asked the man how he could not have possibly noticed that his bed was on fire. He shrugged again - I guess, Sir, maybe I was just a little bit cold?

I cannot speak to the truth of this or whether it was meant to be an honest effort at a Fireman's humor. What I can speak to is that fire can be a dangerous thing. It can also be a wonderful thing, depending on its use. It has been said fire makes a great servant but a nasty taskmaster. (32) 'They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?” The burning heart of a disciple of Jesus Christ ignited by the truth of the living Word of God makes for great servant. The revealed and living Word of God opened to the wounded heart, the cold heart, the broken heart - My friends, it is now Ignition time!

The truth is God wants to set our hearts on fire. To give us a burning passion in life. We all long for the eternal but are too easily contented with the temporary. We want to do something worthwhile but spend too much time wasted. We come, we go, we do our part. We go through motions. We lack purpose. We lack passion. We lack the burning hearts that set those two disciples rushing back to Jerusalem in the middle of the night when they fully and finally realized they had an one on one encounter with the risen Lord. The bread was broken and blessed and in that very instant - Ignition!
(33) 'And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them,' Heartbreak's slow trot became Heartburn's race to victory!

We are not alone. Most people have to deal with hearts that are breaking instead of hearts that are burning. Most people have one too many hurts in their own lives to seriously invest in others. Some of you would like to be more involved, but you’ve got too much on your plates already. So what happens now is your time and energy gets sapped on things that won’t matter when it all ends. What we need is God’s fire upon our lives, giving us purpose and direction, taking us farther than salvation. How do we get from heartbreak to heartburn – that is, moving from our cold hearts to new hearts burning with passion and purpose? Get up! Go for a walk of faith. Heartbreak comes when you only walk through life using your own sight. Heartburn, comes when you choose a different response - walking with Jesus!

Let Us Pray: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Jesus Christ Our Resurrected Lord, Amen.

There is so much Truth in this song. And, indeed, this is my heart's cry. I do not want to say anything
