Day 282: Sharing Our Faith: Competing Drumbeats

Day 282: Sharing Our Faith: Competing Drumbeats

Read: 1 Peter 4:1 - 6

I love a marching band. Just to be part of a crowd that is gathered along a street to watch a parade, and to hear, in the distance, the coming band, before I can see it, has always been a peak event in my life. Way far back when in my Elementary School days I was not just on the sidelines waiting for the grand parade to go by my spot, I was marching with my homeroom in the parade. Each year around Memorial day, the school lined us up by grades and we marched around the neighborhood. I remember those years when we were close enough the school band to march in step with them. The drums were always my favorite. I always had incredible fun marching with them.

What stands out in such bands is their drum section. Some marching bands, in fact, are mostly drums, but most are not. The drummer, guided by the director or drum major, sets the pace, with different music calling for a different beat and pace. It was always exciting for me and even today, there is nothing quite like the sound of drums to stir my spirit to no end. Do you know that you have a big drummer inside you? We speak of the idea, in life, of ’marching to the beat of a drum’. We have a drumbeat that is going every day. You might not even be aware of it, but it’s there. It drives you, It moves you. It is at the core of who you are. What is it? It is your own conscience.

Have you ever given any serious thought about what drives your life? What creates the passion inside of you? What gets your blood so boiling that it just drives so many of the decisions you make in your life. What makes you leap into the fray with such a reckless abandon? What compels your heart to beat like nobody else's business into something that you just have to be a part of the solution? What is it or are they that gives the greatest competition to deciding which pathway you will tread in Ministry or Mission? You need to know what drives you and what sets your drum beating at your heart-of-hearts. There are so many competing drum beats beating in our conscience.

Peter writes to us: 'For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries.' How about the sounds of these drums competing for a drum major position in your conscience? Trying to live out that new life in Christ with God and the Holy Spirit leading the way, while all the while the competing beats continue to try to drum them out. I know that this was probably not the first subject on your mind when you woke up, but it is always on the mind of God. How well are any one of us able to separate out those competing drums to hear God?

Let Us Pray: ABBA Father, we thank You for all you have done for us. We thank you for when You are constantly giving to us far more than we deserve. Yet, ABBA, we must also with the same breath confess to You that too often, we have taken all that you have done for us for granted. We allow our days to slip by without offering You a small song of thanksgiving and praise. ABBA, we will beat the drums of judgment on the faults and failings of others but turn a blind eye to our own. ABBA, we confess to loving more the drum beat of other peoples praises and compliments. ABBA, we also confess our failure to cease the incessant beating upon the drums of our successes. We will freely beat upon somebody else's drum that we might cause them an injury.

ABBA, we confess that there are too many of our own drumbeats O God that we do not listen for Yours. ABBA, I do not know why You would want too, but please forgive us our trespasses. Cleanse us ABBA and renew and re-tune the spirit within us all. I plead to You, ABBA Father, fill our hearts, minds, our lives to overflowing with Your drumbeat. Heal our hearts, heal our wounded spirits. For the sake of Your Kingdom. For Yours is the power! Yours is the glory! Yours is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
