Day 87: May I Help You With Something?

Day 87: May I Help You With Something?

Read: Psalm 121

One of the most common phrases that you will ever hope to hear come from any one persons mouth is probably "May I help you with something?" That is a familiar greeting when we walk into any sort of retail store, any place where we expect to find hospitality as the norm. When have you been at a hotel or motel and not heard someone trying to fall all over themselves trying to provide a service to you and asking that question? Have you ever been in a patient in a hospital and not hear a nurse or aide ask it? It is everywhere we go and we hope that it will be on the lips of everyone we ever meet.

We need help most of the places we go. If we go out to eat someone may help us find a table. They take our order. Someone else even cooks the food. I remember the days when gas stations attendants would fill ‘er up. There were times when grocery stores employed bag boys to carry your groceries out to the car. When you think about it, we are all dependent on someone for something. We are all going to find ourselves, at least one time in our lives going to be in need someone’s help. It is truly unavoidable.

To me this is one of the most comforting passages of scripture. Some scholars have labeled this Psalm the “Travelers Psalm.”

A Song of Ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2)

You will notice at the very beginning is a notation that says, “A song of ascents.” This is a song that the Israelite's would sing as they made their way to the Temple for worship. When I am traveling somewhere, anywhere, I usually find myself turning on my favorite radio station and trying to sing along with what is playing. I find it comforting and I believe it keeps my mind focused It must have been a great source of comfort for weary travelers to be reminded of God’s protection on them as they traveled and prayed these simple words. As we look at this, I can hear God saying, “May I help you?”

God is GREATER than anything. People and things will let us down. There will always be someone who doesn’t come through for us. God never lets us down. How reassuring it is to know that we do not need to look NOWHERE else. Verse 1 says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?” It always comes from just one place: God.

We may seek to find help from many different things. So often we can allow our job to become our source of help. We look to our family for help. We will look to the Church for help. However, these are only temporary and unable to truly help us. God is greater than any of that stuff. Our eternal help doesn’t come from any other source: it is God.

Let us pray: Ever vigilant God, sharpen our sense of vision that we may not just look to the hills for our help but that we may also see that help and find only You there.

Day 86: "Good Enough For .... Who or What"

Day 86: "Good Enough For .... Who or What"

Read: Mark 10:17 - 18

What is 'good enough' anyway? Is that a personal issue like when we say "I am or he is or she is good enough for whatever 'it' was? Is that a way that mankind turns to in an effort to try and tear someone down "They will never be 'good enough' to make any kind of difference anywhere at anytime"? I mean those are some extraordinary words when used in such remarkably negative ways. It is our way of mocking and bringing ridicule into a situation we seek to me more judgmental about than compassionate to. There have been more than one person along the breadth of my own life who have been within six inches of my face telling me "You will never be good enough, don't try!"

So, I ask each of you to consider for yourselves: "What is 'Good Enough' anyway? Good enough to do this but not good enough to do that? I am 'good enough' to stand in this spot on the floor but not nearly 'good enough' to stand in that other spot that is only six inches away from me? Why what makes one spot on the floor more 'good enough' than the other? Is it because we as mankind try to spend too much time trying to control each and every aspect of our environment? Are we feeling in some small way threatened by what might happen if I decide to move six inches closer?

17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 18Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. (Mark 10:17 - 18)

Jesus' response to the man's inquiry seems to be a rather abrupt one 'Why do you call me good? 'Why do you call me good enough? 'Why do you call me good enough for you or anyone else for that matter'? Not good enough for man, just good enough for God because only God is good enough for all! When I ponder the scope or magnitude of this amazing revelation, I come to realize a valuable series of extraordinary truths:

1) I will never, along the course of my lifetime, ever be good enough for every one! I may struggle mightily to achieve such an end, however, my effort will never be enough!
2) Jesus said that he was not good enough for the man, that only God was good. I need to place the fullest measure of my faith and trust and hope into the hands of the only good God there has ever been. There will never be another God more 'good enough' for me or for you!
3) I will never be 'good enough' for God. When I read the Gospel, I see how Jesus kept raising the standard of what constitutes 'Good Enough' for everyone. Since I cannot ever be 'good enough' for everyone but I am always 'good enough' for a good God, I will strive so much more toward meeting and achieving this higher standard of living.
4) What astoundingly Good News! All of God's great goodness is given to everyone as His free gift when we trust in Him and Him alone (Psalm 118:8). That is when I am 'good enough' for God and God alone! What an awesome breath of release and relief!

Let us pray: Redeeming God, I confess to you that I struggle too hard to be 'good enough' to eyes of my mother and my father, to the eyes of my brothers and my sisters, to the eyes of my neighbors. Have compassion upon struggles and forgive them as You forgive all things. Open my eyes that I may see, my ears that I may hear, my spirit that I may receive and my mouth that I may speak the truth that I will always and forever be 'good enough' for you. In the good name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and my Savior who was, is, ever shall be 'good enough' for me.

Day 85: Ordinary Name For An Extraordinary Time

Day 85: Ordinary Name For An Extraordinary Time

Read: Hebrews 1:1 - 4

I have a confession to make. I have an ordinary name that was given to me by my Dad. There is nothing particularly exotic about it and there are no deep and mysterious meanings to be gleaned by it except that it is quite biblical. It is a fairly common name. I do not have any particular problems with it not that I had much choice about it when I was born. I couldn't really debate it with my Dad so I just laid back and accepted it. So,today I with an ordinary name, in an ordinary home, drive an ordinary car, live out as ordinary a life as I can. I believe you get the idea that I have gotten ordinary down pat.

Most of my life has been mired in the ordinary and mundane things in life. For a long time it has been an exhausting struggle to remain ordinary. Well, the truth of it is this – I am tired of hearing that word. I am tired of trying so hard to live in the shadow that word. Sometimes, I want to be extraordinary. In the back of my mind I desire to be, for a little while at least, to be a little bit extraordinary, to have a cool strong sounding name. I want so much to be admired by others that I don’t have to keep on feeling deep down within me a growing sense of shame of being just an ordinary human being.

There are moments when I pray to Jesus for my fair share of extraordinary. I mean, lets face it, Jesus had an ordinary name, was an ordinary boy playing ordinary games with other ordinary boys who lived in an ordinary home in an ordinary village. Until you take the time to realize that His birth was extraordinary in nature. That His Father God was far beyond anything we understand as being extraordinary. That made this man Jesus ordinary in an extraordinary way. This same Jesus would later in life take all that we now understand as ordinary, through the power of God, transform it far beyond our own concept of extraordinary. A loaf of Bread became His Body, A cup of wine, His blood.

It is good to remind ourselves as often as possible in whose name we are praying. We need to keep in our minds the extraordinary nature and credentials of the One who ushers us into God's presence in the first place. There is nothing ordinary about what He is doing sitting alongside of His Father on our behalf each and every day forever.

I ask that you consider praying about it. Jesus went far beyond extraordinary at Mount Calvary that we too may one day live with Him far beyond the realms of ordinary or extraordinary. He is the only Son Of God and the exact representation of God's being in whose image we were all created before we were born to our ordinary parents, given ordinary names to live out our ordinary lives trying to extraordinary things with God.

Day 84: May I have A Cup of Praise Please ...

Day 84: May I have A Cup of Praise Please ...

Read: Psalm 103

There are many things I wish I could do better. I wish I could be a better cook that I may prepare for my wife that first breakfast in bed that was not just a peanut butter and jelly on wheat toast. I wish I could better at sorting my wife's laundry so she wouldn't get so mad at me when some of her colors run together with the whites. I wish that one day I could become a better more loving husband to my wonderful wife. I wish that one day when all these other wishes bears the appropriate fruits in life, then I wish I could become a whole lot more better at appreciating and praising my awesome God.

I am afraid that I have not been nearly appreciative or praising enough for that which I have already been mightily blessed to receive. I guess that I am too often disappointed by life. Unfortunately, I have found that there are one too many days in my life that just do not reached that level for which praise and appreciation warrant any response. But even when life does go my way, I am not particularly thankful because, well .... in all honesty, I believe I am more than just a little bit deserving (finally, it's about time!!).

Lately, I have been asking the Holy Spirit to remind me of the reasons why praise and appreciation are so vitally important to promoting and maturing spiritual well being:

Praise helps us appreciate all the past, present and future blessings we enjoy through the Holy Spirit. The Lord calls all believers to be intimate with Him and praise facilitates our nearness to God. Praise enables us to come closer to the Lord so He can come closer to us. Praise and appreciation are essential bonding agents between us and God.

Praise helps us to appreciate who we are and what we can become by focusing our attentions on God who is holy, pure and blameless in everything. Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God. Blessed are the people who believe but have not seen. People who are in intimate fellowship with the Lord are able to give greater thanks to the Lord for His power and sovereign control in all things that He created.

Praise helps us fully appreciate and appropriate God’s grace, goodness and peace. The more we know God the better we are able to enjoy His presence and grow in all aspects into Christ. Praise helps us gain a greater level of spiritual awareness of how enriched we are through God’s blessings. It is our privilege to praise the Lord as He gradually reveals more ways that He has blessed us while we give Him greater glory.

I am sure that as you come to read this, that your heart will find itself strangely warmed by even more reasons to praise and appreciate all that the Lord our God has done. I can well appreciate and praise the Lord that for as many people God has blessed, there are an infinite number of reasons to begin your prayer with 'Bless the Lord, O My Soul'.

Pray: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, You call out to us today, telling us to come and sit at Your feet and be refreshed. You call us today to be at peace in Your Presence and to recognize all that You are doing everywhere all around us so we can see the magnitude of Your power and be put at ease in our relationship. Set aside our pride or ego that still exists, set us aside so we can praise & worship at Your feet and be renewed ourselves. Amen

Day 83: Writing and Singing The Next New God Song

Day 83: Writing and Singing The Next New God Song

Read: Psalm 40

This morning as I find myself sitting quietly at my kitchen table, I am slowly coming to an awareness of the sounds that are around me. Overhead there is the sound of the slowly whooshing wind as the ceiling fan blades over head of me go round and round. I find it to be soothing and quite relaxing not harsh or overwhelming. The breeze is not too cool and actually I find that the sound of it all is a most welcoming way of relaxing.Somewhere in the background is the trilling and meowing of at least two of our six cats who are probably hungry and waiting for their food or trying to gain my attention.

These are not particularly new sounds to my ears, in fact sometimes the sounds of these cats as they sing their cacophony of different sounds is more like the old finger nails against the chalkboard sound - extraordinarily irritating when I am trying to finish my morning routine. Irregardless of how the cats are sounding or how fast the blades above are moving through the air, it is always a pleasant experience for me to listen to voice of God's word singing to me each morning as I try to bring a new revelation of God as He is desires to bring relationship into our lives. Each is a brand new 'God song'.

I have never been, nor am I now and have no plans in the future to try to be any where near the same eloquence of King David when he felt his kingly heart strangely warmed by God after I do not know how many times David prayed for redemption. David was an extraordinarily eloquent man. He had the heart of the greatest of all the poets and like us, all too frequently found himself in great need of one more version of God's great redemption songs. Songs that sing to the most hardened of hearts of love and great displays of divine power. Songs that inspire the worst voices in all creation to sing as they have never sung before, with reckless abandon before all congregations.

David wrote these amazing words which this morning I find so amazingly relevant as I find myself in a great period of eager anticipation, waiting for the next new 'God' thing. This morning let us all come together in song, our hearts and voices on full display before the Lord:

1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the desolate pit,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord. (Psalm 40:1 - 3)

Day 82: Builder's In Christ

Day 82: Builder's In Christ

Read: 1 Corinthians 3:10 - 15

Ask yourself these questions, Will the work that I have done, will the work that I strive to do today, the work that I begin anew tomorrow and throughout the rest of my life endure the lapse of years and the times of change? Will the work that I so passionately labor at stand up and endure the rigorous, roughest tests of time itself or at least while I am still alive and able to strive, seeking to build upon what labor I have already been able to do? Unless you are going to end up in a Hall of Fame somewhere, who knows?

This passage from Scripture reminds me of the story of the three little pigs striving to build a better house to keep the big bad wolf out of their living rooms. The first pig builds his house out of straw. The big bad wolf comes along and huffs and puffs and blows his house down. The second pig believes he has built a stronger house out of sticks he found lying around in some forest somewhere. The big bad wolf comes along once again, does his thing and walla, no more house of sticks. The third pig learns his lesson very well and builds his house out of mortar and brick. The wolf comes along overflowing with confidence. A confidence that is short lived when the bricks don't fall.

Paul admonishes, “Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw — the work of each builder will become visible, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done.” (verses 12, 13) Paul understood very well that gold, silver, and precious stones will endure while the wood, hay, and straw will quickly burn. "If what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward. If the work is burned, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as through fire." (14, 15). The pigs surviving their ordeal with the wolf must now strengthen themselves.

Notice anything in particular about the first group – gold, silver, costly stones – they are works of God:
• They are products of God’s creative acts. These are placed here by God in creation. I can’t produce them or make them. They are not the result of growth or some kind of development. They have all endured and always will continue to endure the test of time.
• These are works of God, works of the Spirit. Only such works of God are lasting.
• This has to do with things spiritual - our new life in Christ, the new creation. The true eternally enduring foundation established by God from the first dawn of creation itself.

Let us Pray: Lord God, Creator of all things, you have established the foundation upon which creation itself rests. You have established the eternal boundaries of the universe. By the works of Your hands alone have all things have come into being. You created us in your own perfect image to do the work of building Your kingdom on earth. Create in us the builders heart, define us, refine us, through Your sacred fires borne of creation. In Jesus' name Amen.

Day 81: Three Tests: Building A Spiritual House.

Day 81: Three Tests For Building A Spiritual House.

Read: 1 John 2:3 - 11

One of the important lessons to be learned from the book of 1 John is that you and I might come to know and believe and experience that the spiritual houses that we are striving and working so hard trying to build up instead of exerting greater effort toward tearing down, that the reasons we are deliberately putting ourselves out there in our neighborhoods and communities is for at least one right reason and that someday it is absolutely positively going to become a God sized difference somewhere somehow.

Notice a phrase that occurs three times in these verses. It is the phrase “whoever says.” It occurs in three times in verses 4, 6 and 9 and serves to introduce us to a series of opportunities to test whereby we can know beyond a shadow of doubt that the God sized thing we are preparing to do is being done for what we believe are right reasons.

1) THE TEST OF ATTITUDE (verses 3-5). This first test that John talks about is the test of your attitude towards obeying the Word and will of God: A person who is genuine will have a heart attitude that desires to be obedient to what they believe God is saying. He doesn’t mean that all of us will perfectly obedient all the time. But he does mean that there is going to be at the very least the strongest desire for obedience in our hearts.

2) THE TEST OF ACTIONS (verse 6). You know that your spiritual house is being built upon a strong foundation if there is a growing sense of obligation on your part to live your life as Jesus lived, to respond to the things of life as Jesus responded to them, to feel compelled to act upon the opportunities, challenges of life the way Jesus did. Our walk and talk ought to coincide. Our lives ought to be consistent with the way we talk.

3) THE TEST OF AFFECTION (verses 7-11). Your love for making a difference will be an indication of whether or not you are trying to do God sized things for the right reasons. Is it growing stronger? Is it gaining momentum? Is it reaching a point where you feel like you cannot help yourself any longer or like John Wesley experienced, is it growing strangely warmer and warmer with each passing day? Are you smiling more each day at the awesome God sized possibilities and blessings that you're sure will be the result.

Today, let your heart be strangely warmed by the same kind of burning, transforming love that God keeps in abundance for all those whom He created in His Image - the one's whose love continually strives to build a bigger, better, stronger spiritual house into the Perfect Image of God's Perfect Love on earth as it is in heaven! Pray Psalm 139.
